BECOME A ROWER

Rowers are the complete package. They need to possess strength to pull on an oar, endurance to race all out for 6 minutes, and the mental toughness to outpace & outlast opponents. Cougar Crew trains year-round in order to compete at the highest level during racing season. Training is done with weights, stairs, ergometers, and in boats on the beautiful Snake River - just 20 minutes from WSU’s Pullman campus.

Rowers must possess excellent physical conditioning and endurance to endure the demanding nature of the sport. Through rigorous training, they develop strong muscles, particularly in the legs, back, and core, which provide the primary source of propulsion. Additionally, rowers cultivate a high level of cardiovascular fitness, allowing them to sustain their effort over extended distances.

Technical proficiency is another crucial aspect of a rower's role. They must master the intricate details of the rowing stroke, including the catch, drive, finish, and recovery. Precise coordination of these movements ensures efficient transfer of power from the rower's body to the oar, optimizing boat speed. Rowers also need to maintain a synchronized rhythm with their teammates, as unity and cohesion within the boat directly impact its overall performance.

Furthermore, rowers exhibit discipline, mental toughness, and a strong work ethic. They endure grueling training sessions, pushing themselves to their limits both physically and mentally. Rowers understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration, relying on trust and communication with their fellow crew members to achieve collective goals. Their dedication, determination, and focus on continuous improvement contribute to the overall success of the crew and their pursuit of victory.
