FAWLEY CUP

April 20, 2024 - Silver Lake in Spokane, WA

Washington State raced in the Fawley Cup Regatta, Silver Lake, on Saturday, April 20th. The race course was marked every 500 meters by large buoys. There was a 5-10 mph quartering headwind that caused a decent ripple, with no whitecaps – but it did limit speed. The main takeaway from the weekend was the ever-closing gap between the WSU and Gonzaga boats. Boats in all categories lessened the gap, forecasting even tighter battles for the cup in coming years.

Results

Men’s Varsity Eights (MV8)

In the varsity eight race, Gonzaga got a lead off of the start. WSU countered the Zag’s starting surge and stopped their momentum. From there it was a neck-and-neck race down the course. Gonzaga held off the Cougs to win by 3.65 seconds. Last year (2023) Gonzaga won by 10 seconds. This year the Cougs narrowed the difference to 3.65 seconds - or right at one boat length, which was a 6.35-second improvement.

The team was pleased with their technique during the race but was not pleased with the outcome. Coach Peter Brevick said ‘I was surprised that the times were as fast as they were, given the conditions.’

1V8:

Gonzaga 6:10.8

WSU 6:14.4

Gonzaga also won the Second Varsity Eight, although WSU decreased the relative margin (year to year) by 10 seconds.

WSU 6:50.3

Men’s Novice Eights (MN8)

Gonzaga won the Novice/M3V8 race as well. Notably, the Cougars lost their first Novice 8 race of the season but they had the challenge of racing a fast opponent - that should help them in preparation for the WIRA Championship next week.

Gonzaga F8 6:35.3

Gonzaga 3V8 6:45.3

WSU 1N8 6:54.5

WSU 2N8 7:03.2

Looking Ahead

The WIRA (Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association) Regatta is next. It will be held on Lake Natoma, in Rancho Cordova, CA; just outside of Sacramento on April 27 & 28, 2024. The WIRA Regatta is a combination of athletic department and club sports teams. This regatta will offer some of the best opponents the Cougs have raced all year and should feature some close racing.
