HEAD OF THE SNAKE

October 11, 2024

The Cougs hosted their newly welcomed PAC-12 adversaries on The Snake River in the Head of The Snake race. This was the first race for the novices and a great racing experience to kick off their collegiate racing careers. The Coug’s showcased 3 Mens Varsity 8’s, 3 Novice 8’s, a Varsity Women’s 4, and a men’s 1x. What better place to showcase the teams growth than on our very own Cathedral! The Varsity side of racing saw some very strong and intense competition. The Men’s 2nd Varsity 8+ showed a lot of poise and composure facing off against The Bulldogs and were able to pull off a 4.6 second victory over Gonzaga’s 2nd Varsity 8+. The Cougs had the first two Men’s Varsity 8’s within 14 seconds of each other, marking a shift in the competitive ability of the team in comparison to previous years. With a very promising start to the 2024-2025 season, The Cougs will find their speed as the road to ACRAs is continuously paved…

QUOTES

“Not bad for the first race of the year, lots to build off of as a boat and as a team. Lots of the incoming varsity getting to feel what a varsity race is like and there is a lot of exciting progress to be made.”

Dylan Reeves (6 seat of Mens 1V8+)

“It was great to have Gonzaga out with us to have a chance for some great racing and rowing. Even though it was our first time rowing in our lineup I feel like everyone put in all their effort which made it into a great row. I think this race will help set us up for a better row for head of the Spokane next week.”

Aiden Kennedy (Bow seat of Mens 3V8+)

“I think that for our first race as a novice group it went extremely well. The whole boat was really into the race encouraging each other. It was also great learning experience which was enhanced by having Logan Davis one of the experienced rowers in the boat to talk us through what went well and what we can work on. Overall it was a really fun experience that taught me a lot as well as reminded me why I enjoy racing sports.”
